PROJECTS

WEST FRONT WESTMINSTER ABBEY

The restoration of the West Front has included the filling of twenty, hitherto empty, niches
with new life-sized stone statues, thereby completing the architectural composition of this
imposing facade. The ten fifteenth-Century niches above the great West Door now contain
statues of twentieth-Century Christian Martyrs which represent the Orthodox, Anglican,
Lutheran, Roman Catholic, Presbyterian and Baptist traditions.

This completes the most extensive programme of repair works undertaken during the
900 years of The Abbey's existence. For the last ten years these works have been carried out
under the direction of Donald Buttress, the Surveyor of the Fabric and a partner of Buttress
Fuller Alsop William, and have achieved national recognition by receiving no less than five
major awards.

BELLE ISLE, WINDERMERE

Belle Isle is a large Grade 1 listed classical villa of circular plan on an island in Lake
Windermere. Four years ago, a fire broke out which completely destroyed the domed roof
and the second floor and damaged much of the remaining fabric. Buttress Fuller Alsop
Williams were commissioned to supervise the complex reconstruction which
is now nearing completion.

LONGSIGHT SDHQ & CCC, MANCHESTER

Greater Manchester Police Authority appointed Buttress Fuller Alsop Wiliams to design their
new Sub-Divisional Headquarters Building on a prominent site two miles south of the city
centre.  In addition to normal facilities for administrative, uniformed and plain-clothed staff,
the new SDHQ also comprises Major Incident and Identity Parade Suites and an adjoining
Central Custody Complex of 59 cells, built to replace the existing post-charge facility in the
centre of Manchester.

HATTERSLEY PRIMARY CARE CENTRE

Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams were appointed by Tameside & Glossop Community and
Priority Services NHS Trust to develop proposals for the extensions and reconfiguration of
an existing health care centre to provide Primary Care Resource Centre accommodation.
The existing system-building was extended, re-modelled and refurbished to incorporate a new
pharmacy, provide additional administrative and clinical facilities, improve disabled access
and renew heating and ventilation. The project was completed on time and within budget.
